Frequently asked questions

The things people ask before they get started. Don't see yours? Call us — we're happy to answer.

General

Trust, logistics and the basics of working with us.

What areas do you serve?

We work across the Tampa Bay area — Tampa, St. Petersburg, Sarasota, Parrish and Palmetto. If you're just outside that range, ask; we'll tell you honestly whether it's a fit.

How much experience do you have?

True Carpenters has 5+ years building across the Tampa Bay area, with a focus on decking and framing. We're glad to talk through our experience and share references relevant to your project when you reach out.

Do you offer free estimates?

Yes. We provide a free, no-obligation estimate after we understand the scope of your project. The more detail you can share up front, the more accurate that estimate will be.

Do you work with homeowners, builders, or both?

Both. We work directly with homeowners on decks, remodels and additions, and we work as a framing and carpentry subcontractor for builders and general contractors.

What's your main specialty?

Decking and framing. Those are the two things we build most and know best. We also handle finish carpentry, cabinets, kitchens and demolition — usually as part of a larger project.

How do you back up your work?

The best proof is our work and the people we've done it for. We'll share references relevant to your project when you reach out, walk you through exactly how we'll build yours, and stand behind our workmanship. Ask us anything about how we operate — we'll give you a straight answer.

How do you price a project?

Every project is quoted individually after we understand the scope — there's no flat price list, because a deck or remodel depends on size, materials, access and site conditions. Your free estimate lays out the cost before any work starts.

How soon can you start?

It depends on our current schedule and the size of your project. Tell us your timeline when you reach out and we'll be honest about when we can realistically begin.

¿Hablan español?

Sí. Hablamos español — llámenos al (813) 481-1843 o mándenos los detalles de su proyecto y con gusto le respondemos.

How do I get started?

Request a quote through the form on this site or call us. We'll ask a few questions about your project, then set up a time to see it and put together an estimate.

Do you handle permits?

Permit requirements and responsibilities depend on the project and municipality. We discuss what is likely to be required during the estimate and document responsibilities before work begins.

By service

A few specifics that come up on particular kinds of work.

DeckingHow long does a deck build take?

Most residential decks take a few days to two weeks on site once materials are in hand, depending on size, height and whether we're removing an old structure first. We give you a realistic schedule before we start.

DeckingComposite or wood — which should I choose?

Composite costs more up front but holds up well to Florida sun and moisture with almost no maintenance. Pressure-treated wood is easier on the budget but needs periodic sealing. We'll walk you through the trade-offs for your specific yard and budget.

DeckingDo I need a permit for a deck?

Many deck projects require a permit. Requirements vary by municipality and by how the deck attaches to the home, so permit needs and responsibilities are confirmed before work begins.

FramingDo you work as a framing subcontractor for builders?

Yes. A large share of our framing work is for general contractors and builders who need a dependable crew. We're comfortable working from your plans and schedule.

FramingCan you handle load-bearing changes in a remodel?

Load-bearing changes require the correct engineering and approvals. When a beam or connection is specified, we build the carpentry work to the approved plan.

FramingDo you frame to hurricane code?

Florida's wind-load requirements drive a lot of framing details — connectors, strapping and fastening schedules. We frame to the approved plans and local code for the area you're in.

Finish CarpentryCan you match existing trim in an older home?

In most cases, yes. We can match common profiles off the shelf or have custom profiles milled when the original trim is unusual. We'll bring samples before committing.

Finish CarpentryDo you do custom built-ins?

Yes — bookcases, entertainment centers, mudroom benches, window seats and more. We build to the space so it looks integrated rather than added on.

Kitchen RemodelsDo you design the kitchen or just build it?

We focus on the build — structure, cabinets and finish carpentry — and work from your design or your cabinet supplier's layout. If you're early in the process, we can point you toward the decisions that matter most.

Kitchen RemodelsCan you open up my kitchen by removing a wall?

Often, yes. If the wall is load-bearing, the project may require an engineered beam and permit. We review the scope and build the framing work to the approved plan.

Kitchen RemodelsHow long is a kitchen remodel?

It depends heavily on scope and how much is changing structurally. We'll give you a realistic phase-by-phase schedule after we see the space and understand the plan.

CabinetryWill you install cabinets I bought myself?

Yes. We regularly install homeowner- and supplier-provided cabinetry. We'll check the order against the space before install day so surprises don't hold up the job.

CabinetryCan you build custom cabinets for an odd space?

Yes, when a stock box won't work we can build to fit. Custom work takes longer and costs more, so we'll be straight with you about when it's worth it.

DemolitionDo you haul away the debris?

Yes. Debris removal and site cleanup are part of the job unless we agree otherwise up front. We keep the site workable as we go.

DemolitionCan you do demo only, without the rebuild?

In many cases yes, though demo paired with our framing and finish work is where we add the most value — we take down exactly what the rebuild needs and nothing it doesn't.
